Sweco To Study Interconnection Of Power Grids Between Uganda, Tanzania

EBR Staff Writer Published 01 March 2010

Sweco will study the potential and present proposals for interconnection of the power grids between Uganda and Tanzania in order to reduce the current shortage of power in the region. The contract is worth approximately EUR1.2m.

The assignment is being carried out on behalf of Uganda Electricity Transmission with financing from the World Bank. The company is already involved in similar assignments in countries like Botswana, Ethiopia, Mozambique, Angola and Tanzania.

Sweco said that, by interconnecting the power grids around Lake Victoria, it is possible to reduce the shortage and ensure a stable electricity supply in the region.

Eva Nygren, president of Sweco Sweden, said: "Over the past 50 years Sweco has worked in many African countries to improve access to electricity in both urban and rural areas."

Sweco is a consulting group with expertise in engineering, environmental technology and architecture.
