ANDREA Informatique - Software Engineering

ANDREA Informatique is a consultancy firm advising companies on issues of organisation and strategy related to new technologies, software design and test. Our services go from on-site consultations to maintenance and assistance, passing through design, implementation, testing and integration.

ANDREA Informatique has been working in test methodology for several years and has implemented the Generic Test Tool PHENIX wich is distributed under license. ANDREA Informatique also proposes ready-to-use DLMS Cosem stacks (clients and servers). We have a partnership with ST Microelectronics and have integrated and tested the stack in the microcontroller STM32.

PHENIX - Validation and stress testing of communication systems

Today, one of the major problems encountered in the smart metering testing area is the increasing number of heterogeneous equipment that needs to communicate reliably with each other through complex communication systems. This problem is still more relevant if test requirements need the simultaneous execution of several heterogeneous protocols and heterogeneous interfaces with the system under test (SUT).

PHENIX is the answer to these requirements; PHENIX is a computer aided test generation environment for the validation and stress testing of communication systems (smart metering networks, remote processing protocols and telecommunications, etc).

PHENIX successively enables:

  • Organisation of tests in abstract and executable test suites (ATS, ETS) according to the test plan
  • Design of test scenarios in the high-level message sequence chart 96 (MSC) specification language, by means of a syntax-oriented graphic editor
  • Instantiating messages and configurations using a user-friendly tree protocol syntax-oriented editor (ASN.1), activated from the MSC editor
  • A top frontal high-level user interface (general test methodology for protocols and hardware)
  • Execution of several protocols simultaneously
  • Graphic result analysis (test log system) a production of a test report
  • Creation of stress tests using functional tests which implies stressing by means of multi-protocol tests
  • Distinctive application and data layers, which guarantees - and this at a lesser cost – evolution and extensibility features of all modules in PHENIX (plug and play interfaces and protocols)
  • Complete turnkey installation (network and tools)
  • An extensive catalogue of smart metering and telecommunication protocols. DLMS Cosem (S-FSK, OFDM, GPRS, IP, M-BUS, ZigBee, etc), M-BUS (wired and wireless), SML, IEC1107, etc

PHENIX allows all potential "test actors" to save time (utilities, providers, system designers, software suppliers, certification institutions), in the following areas:

Reduced coding time

The average implementation time of a test is considerably reduced. In comparison with direct programming of the SUT, the use of this technique assures a time saving factor of minimum three. This productivity gain has been measured on all the test development phases (rating from specification to execution).

Test cases readability

Test cases and related data are easily read by means of graphic standard editors.

Reusable data

For example at a change of SUT (different plug and play). Functional test cases can also be used to stress the SUT.


PHENIX can be seen as a federator for all test situations, and from this point of view PHENIX helps users to deal with a general user interface and a general test methodology, which contributes to cutting down project costs.

Test log analysis

PHENIX has a user friendly interface to access test logs and to produce signed (private key) test reports automatically.

DLMS Cosem stacks

ANDREA Informatique's catalogue includes all profiles for the protocol DLMS Cosem. These libraries are written in C++ and have been integrated in the STM32 microcontroller of ST Microelectronics.
